2 Skeins and 2 Colors = 2 Unique Hats

Standard

A couple months ago, we shared some new colors of Babe Softcotton Chunky that we’ve stocked in the store. Since then, we’ve had a little bit of fun experimenting with a free hat pattern we’ve found through Universal Yarns’ website.

If you haven’t added color work to your knitting skillset yet, this is a great low-risk way to try it out! Bulky yarn means this will knit up quickly and the pattern uses a simple stranded technique.

Get the free pattern (which we can also print for you in the store) then pick out two colors of Softcotton Chunky at our store. You’ll have two new hats to wear or gift to someone else in no time at all!

If you need some assistance getting started, we’re happy to help with that, too. Come by any time with quick questions or sign up for one of our many weekly clinics. We offer private lessons, too – just call the store at 612-925-2454 to schedule.

Dory Pullover from Swans Island

Standard

IMG_4231IMG_4234We’re showing off this cute pullover as a shop sample recently because we’re just so in love with it! The pattern, Dory Pullover, is an instant classic that comes to us from Swans Island Company.

We used three skeins of the sport-weight self-striping Ambiente from Schoppel-Wolle (current color selection pictured here) and two skeins of a contrasting color (stash buster alert!) to make the 2 year old size. This is a nice superwash wool, so this pullover is perfect for even the most active kid.

We’re always so excited when the right yarn brings a simple pattern to life, aren’t you?

Knitting for Health

Standard

Recently there have been several articles about how knitting reduces stress and improves other physical traits —

From the New York Times:

Dr. Herbert Benson, a pioneer in mind/body medicine and author of “The Relaxation Response,” says that the repetitive action of needlework can induce a relaxed state like that associated with meditation and yoga. Once you get beyond the initial learning curve, knitting and crocheting can lower heart rate and blood pressure and reduce harmful blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

But unlike meditation, craft activities result in tangible and often useful products that can enhance self-esteem. I keep photos of my singular accomplishments on my cellphone to boost my spirits when needed.

From Collective Evolution:

According to a study published in 2011, elders who participate in arts and crafts are up to 50 percent less likely to experience a decline in brain function or a mild cognitive impairment compared to those who don’t.

And in the Chicago Tribune:

“Even if people have a bad week or don’t feel well, we encourage them to come,” she said. “A lot of the people here don’t have a lot of family nearby, and this provides them with some company.”

Of course we agree with all of this positive news about knitting! We’d love to see you in the store (whether you knit or crochet). You can schedule a private lesson, join a clinic, or considering visiting during our monthly Urban Knitters group which meets on the last Saturday of the month from 3-5pm.

RSVP to join on Facebook and let’s keep the fun conversations going online!
